Neurodivergent Therapy in Decatur, GA

Therapy that works with your brain, not against it.

If you’ve ever finished a therapy session and felt more misunderstood than when you walked in, you’re not imagining it. Traditional therapy is often built around a neurotypical model — one that can quietly pathologize the very things that make a neurodivergent brain brilliant. At Firefly Wellness Counseling, our neurodivergent therapy is different. We work with adults, entrepreneurs, teens, and children who are autistic, ADHD, AuDHD, or otherwise neurodivergent — and we start from the premise that there is nothing about you that needs to be fixed.

We’re a neurodiversity-affirming practice based in Decatur, GA, serving the greater Atlanta area in person and clients across Georgia and New York virtually.

What is neurodivergent-affirming therapy?

Neurodivergent-affirming therapy is a counseling approach that treats neurodivergence — ADHD, autism, AuDHD, dyslexia, and related ways of thinking — as a natural variation in human cognition rather than a disorder to be corrected. Instead of teaching you to mask, suppress, or “perform” neurotypicality, the work focuses on:

  • Understanding how your specific brain actually operates
  • Unmasking safely and at your own pace
  • Building systems and environments that work with your wiring
  • Healing from years of being told you were lazy, too much, too sensitive, or not trying hard enough
  • Addressing rejection-sensitive dysphoria, burnout, and the anxiety that often piggybacks on lifelong masking

It’s therapy that respects your communication style, your sensory needs, your pace, and your right to exist exactly as you are.

Neurodivergent Therapy for Children & Adults

With Wendy Fritz, LPC — AutPlay-certified

Wendy works with neurodivergent clients across the lifespan — from young children to adults — providing affirming, individualized care for autistic, ADHD, and AuDHD clients.

For Neurodivergent Adults

For adults — especially those identified later in life — therapy is often less about learning new “skills” and more about untangling years of being misread. Wendy’s work with neurodivergent adults focuses on:

  • Post-identification integration (what does it mean that I’m autistic / ADHD / AuDHD?)
  • Unmasking and reconnecting with your authentic self
  • Sensory needs and accommodations that have been suppressed for decades
  • Healing from invalidation and internalized ableism
  • Rejection-sensitive dysphoria
  • Autistic and ADHD burnout
  • Relationships, communication, and self-advocacy

You don’t need a formal diagnosis to start. Many of Wendy’s adult clients are self-identified or somewhere in the middle of figuring it out.

For Neurodivergent Children

For neurodivergent kids — particularly autistic children and children with ADHD — traditional talk therapy often doesn’t land. They’re being asked to use the exact skill set (verbal processing, emotional labeling, sustained attention to an adult’s questions) that’s hardest for them.

Play therapy meets them where they actually are. Wendy is trained in AutPlay Therapy — a neurodiversity-affirming, play-based approach specifically designed for autistic and neurodivergent children. Through structured and child-led play, kids work on:

  • Emotional regulation and identifying feelings
  • Social skills that respect their natural communication style (not forced masking)
  • Impulse control and focus for kids with ADHD
  • Processing big experiences they don’t yet have words for
  • Strengthening the parent-child relationship

We have a fully stocked play therapy room with sand trays, figures, art supplies, and sensory tools — so kids can show us what’s going on instead of having to explain it.

Therapy for Neurodivergent Entrepreneurs

With Anne Rice, LPC, LMHC

There’s a reason so many entrepreneurs, founders, and creative professionals turn out to be neurodivergent. The same brain that struggles with a fluorescent-lit office and a 9-to-5 schedule is often the brain that can hyperfocus for ten hours straight on a problem it actually cares about, see patterns no one else sees, and build something from nothing.

But that brain comes with a cost most people don’t talk about:

  • Executive function tax — the simple stuff (invoicing, email, scheduling) costs you ten times what it costs your neurotypical peers
  • Burnout cycles — six weeks of brilliant hyperfocus followed by two weeks where you can barely answer a text
  • Imposter syndrome that won’t quit — even when the business is working
  • Rejection sensitivity — one piece of cold-pitch feedback can level you for three days
  • Late-identified neurodivergence — realizing in your 30s or 40s that the way you’ve been struggling has a name, and grieving the version of your life that didn’t get that information sooner

I specialize in working with neurodivergent entrepreneurs and creative professionals navigating exactly this. Whether you’re a founder running a team, a creative thinking about leaving your W-2 job, or already running your own thing and trying to do it without burning out — my office is a place where you can be the full version of yourself. No performing required.

Sessions are warm and conversational. Bring your coffee, your fidget, your dog if you want. We’ll do the actual work, and we’ll do it in a way your nervous system can tolerate.

A note on fit: I work specifically with neurodivergent entrepreneurs and creatives — if you’re a neurodivergent adult looking for general therapy support, Wendy is the better match in our practice.
